Types of Rugs & Carpets, Knots, Textiles & Materials

Jaipur, India, is a renowned hub for handmade rugs and carpets, with artisans skilfully producing a diverse range of categories. These can be broadly summarised by their construction methods, materials, and styles, as noted below, though as a process our customers will have finalised their rug design, size, and specifications prior to engaging our services (as we don’t offer design consultation, for example).

By Construction Method

Hand-Knotted Rugs

These are the most traditional and durable, created by individually tying knots (often Persian or Turkish style) onto a warp and weft foundation. This method allows for intricate designs and high knot densities.

Hand-Tufted Rugs

Made by punching yarn through a fabric backing with a tufting tool. While quicker to produce than hand-knotted rugs, they offer a plush pile and can still achieve detailed patterns. They typically have a latex backing for stability.

Flatweave Rugs (Dhurries/Kilims)

These are created by interweaving warp and weft threads, resulting in a flat, reversible, and often lighter rug without a pile. Dhurries are a prominent type of flatweave from India, known for their often geometric and bold patterns.

Hand-Loomed Rugs

These are also woven on hand-operated looms, offering various textures and can incorporate a mix of fibres.

By Common Materials

Wool

The most prevalent fibre for durability, softness, and excellent dye absorption.

Cotton

Primarily used for the foundation (warp and weft) due to its strength and stability, but also sometimes for the pile in flatweaves.

Silk/Bamboo Silk/Viscose

Used for luxurious, lustrous piles, often in finer, more intricate designs to create a shimmering effect.

Jute/Hemp/Other Naturals

Increasingly popular for their natural texture, eco-friendliness, and ability to create more rustic or casual looks, especially in flatweaves.

Blends

Combinations of the above fibres (e.g., wool and silk, wool and viscose) are common to achieve specific textures, lustres, and durability.

By Style and Design

Traditional/Oriental/Persian-Inspired

Drawing heavily from classic Persian and Mughal designs, featuring intricate floral motifs, medallions, and detailed borders.

Modern/Contemporary

Embracing abstract patterns, geometric designs, minimalist aesthetics, and often bolder colour palettes.

Tribal/Moroccan

Characterised by more geometric, symbolic patterns, and often a slightly coarser, more rustic feel.

Floral

Explicitly featuring botanical patterns, ranging from highly detailed and traditional to more stylised and contemporary.

Shaggy

Known for their long, plush pile, offering a cozy and textured look.

Jaipur's artisans are highly adaptable, capable of producing a vast array of custom designs across these categories, making it a versatile source for handmade rugs and carpets.

By Knot Type

When we talk about the “total knot count per inch” in the context of rugs, we’re usually referring to the Knots Per Square Inch (KPSI). This is calculated by multiplying the number of knots in one linear inch vertically by the number of knots in one linear inch horizontally on the back of the rug. By far, we sell mainly Persian and Turkish rugs and carpets, so here’s a summary of their differences.

Persian (Senneh) Knot

The asymmetrical Persian knot allows for a wide range of KPSI, typically from 80 KPSI for coarser weaves up to 500 KPSI or even over 1000 KPSI for exceptionally fine silk rugs. This high density contributes to their ability to produce intricate, curvilinear designs.

Turkish (Ghiordes) Knot

The symmetrical Turkish knot generally has a range from 25 KPSI for very coarse tribal rugs up to 200-300 KPSI for finer examples. While it can still achieve good detail, its symmetrical nature often results in bolder, more geometric patterns.

It's important to remember that KPSI is one of several factors in determining a rug's quality and value; the materials used, dyes, age, origin, and artistic merit are also crucial.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Question

What is the difference between wool rugs and wool-silk rugs?

Wool rugs are known for their durability, softness, and natural insulation, making them ideal for high-traffic areas like living rooms and dining spaces. Wool-silk rugs combine premium wool with silk highlights, adding a luxurious sheen, finer detailing, and depth to the design. The silk elements reflect light beautifully, giving the rug a more refined, designer look. For Australian homes, wool rugs are practical and long-lasting, while wool-silk rugs are perfect for creating a statement or luxury interior feel.

Yes, designer wool and silk rugs are considered a long-term investment due to their superior craftsmanship, natural materials, and timeless appeal. Unlike mass-produced rugs, handmade wool and silk rugs retain their beauty for decades and often improve with age. When ordered directly from artisans, Australian buyers can access luxury, bespoke rugs at significantly better value than retail showrooms, making them both a practical and aesthetic investment.

Choosing between wool and wool-silk rugs depends on how the space is used and the look you want to achieve. Wool rugs are ideal for family homes, busy areas, and minimalist or relaxed interiors. Wool-silk rugs suit formal living rooms, bedrooms, and designer spaces where elegance and visual depth are important. Many Australian homeowners choose wool-silk rugs for feature rooms and wool rugs for everyday living spaces.

Handmade wool and silk rugs are crafted using traditional hand-knotting or hand-weaving techniques by skilled artisans. Natural wool provides strength and resilience, while silk is used to create fine detailing and highlights. With proper care, these rugs can last 30–50 years or more, making them one of the most durable and sustainable flooring choices for Australian homes.
